Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil
Developed in partnership with 0E1 Arquitetos.
A Brazilian apartment for a Brazilian family that lives in the United States. The apartment is in Porto Alegre, but its ambitions are slightly larger. It is meant to serve as a small Brazilian embassy, where the family's children can get acquainted with a country they don't actually live in. The kitchen is at the center of things, with a large island that works equally well for cooking, eating, and doing neither. A curved stainless steel volume interrupts an otherwise wooden apartment, housing a home office lined entirely in Cumaru wood. Brazilian stones, tiles, furniture, and artwork appear throughout. Some are old, some are new, and some were made specifically for the apartment. Together, they make a fairly convincing argument for Brazilian design. The idea is simple: a little piece of Brazil, available year-round.
