Helvetia Apartment

Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil

This apartment, built in the early 1970s, presented many of the typical characteristics of middle-class multi-family modernist buildings in Brazil. This meant that they were planned for a family with kids along with a live-in maid. Because of that, there was a clear separation between the areas dedicated for back of house activities, such as kitchen, laundry room, and maid bedroom, and the areas for the family. These attributes reflect the segregated organization of Brazilian society during that period and have become anachronic with the needs of today. The new owner, a young adult who works from home as a video game streamer, needed to update most of the original program to his needs. This, in turn, meant that besides changes in finishes and materials, the apartment's entire layout needed to be reconsidered.
